The Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems (IHC) was created in 1998 in order to allow discussion and exchange of experiences among researchers from the Human-Computer Interaction area about research being done in Brazil. Its first edition was in October 1998, as a Workshop associated with the Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering. In 2000 the event became independent and joined the series of SBC’s "Brazilian Symposiums".

The event was organized annually until 2002. From 2002 to 2010, the IHC and the Latin American Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (CLIHC), were transformed into biennial events.
